Think Masterminds are only for 6 and 7 figure business owners? Then think again because there are Masterminds for every level of business from startups to billion dollar businesses.

In this post I’m explaining exactly what a Mastermind is, who they are for and how to select the right one for you.

What is a mastermind and do I need one

What Exactly Are Masterminds?

A Mastermind is a group of people who come together regularly to create (either in real or virtual form) and implement goals, brainstorm ideas and support each other with respect, honesty and understanding. Mastermind participants act as catalysts for exponential growth, hold each other accountable and provide resources and advice.

Masterminds were originally created by Napoleon Hill in the early 1900s and he explained the concept in his book ‘Think And Grow Rich’.

He stated that Masterminds are “The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony.” He goes onto say that “No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind.” Hence the term ‘Master’ mind.

The benefits of joining a Mastermind include:

*Collaboration. The best Masterminds partner the right types of people together so that participants get the best experience and results. You are in a group with like minded people who have similar values and goals.

You may find someone in the group that is a perfect fit to work on a project with you. Or, you may be the perfect person to help another member as well. The group works together collaboratively, to achieve more together.

*Exclusive advice and support. Most Masterminds have an application process. This ensures that each member is clear on the benefits and responsibilities so that everyone brings their best to the group.

As a result tremendous energy, momentum and results are achieved through a Mastermind community.

*New Learning and Personal Growth. By interacting and sharing your goals and challenges others in your group have the opportunity to offer insights, resources and strategies that can solve your problem or help you achieve your goals.

You will find that you think bigger, outside the box and stretch beyond your boundaries when surrounded by great people doing amazing things.

Who Are Masterminds For?

At the risk of sounding generic or romantic, Masterminds are can help anyone who wants to grow both professionally and personally.  Whether you are just starting out in your business or whether you are looking to go from 6 figures to beyond there is a Mastermind group that can help you get there.

The only real prerequisite is joining a Mastermind is a commitment, not just to yourself but to the others in your group. You must decide that you want to grow and stretch yourself so that you can then uplevel your business also.

Without this conscious decision to commit you will be wasting your time and money joining a Mastermind, not to mention letting down the others in  your group.

How To Choose A Mastermind

So, if you are convinced of the value of Masterminds (and I sure hope you are) then how do you choose one that will suit you?

Here is a Mastermind Selection Checklist for you to use to make it simple to find a Mastermind that’s a great fit.

1. Define your goal/s for joining a Mastermind group – is it for a specific focus or topic? For example learning how to build a business from scratch, launching a course or reaching a certain income level.

Perhaps you need accountability, want to feel part of a genuine, like minded community or a looking for personal growth. Whatever your goals get clear about them so you can easily identify whether a particular Mastermind will provide that for you.

2. Take stock of your skills, gifts and challenges. When you are aware of what you bring to the table and also what you need help and support with it becomes far easier to choose a Mastermind that not only will help you immensely but where you can contribute greatly too.

3. Check the rules, expectations and commitment of the Mastermind group to make sure you can fulfill them and they meet your needs also. The right expectations are crucial, both for effectiveness and productivity, as well as handling any situations that may come up with group and team dynamics.

What day and time do they meet? Is it in person or virtual? What is expected in between calls? How are the calls or meet ups run? What part will you play? What happens if you can’t make every call?

4.Get To Know the facilitator of the Mastermind.
Check out who is running the Mastermind. It is important to have some knowledge and rapport with the facilitator as it is their job to make sure the group runs smoothly and effectively.

Read the information about the Mastermind and connect with the facilitator if you can to chat about whether you are a good fit for the Mastermind and visa versa.

What I know to be true in life and in Masterminds is that we can accomplish far more together than we can alone.

There’s an old Kenyan Proverb which states ‘Sticks in a bundle are unbreakable’.
